If you're traveling for Thanksgiving, Hanukah, or Christmas and can't take your pet with you, it's important to reserve a kennel now so you're not left scrambling to find pet care before you leave. However, it's just as essential to choose a boarding facility where your pet will feel comfortable and you can relax knowing that the staff is meeting his needs.

Benefits of Choosing a Professional Boarding Kennel for Your Pet

Unlike most hotels, your pet is welcome and appreciated at a boarding kennel. She will also receive much more attention and exercise than she would when left at home with someone checking in on her each day. Boarding kennel staff has the training to know when your pet is ill, to administer medications, and to follow special routines. When not out exercising or socializing with the staff and other animals, your pet remains in a secured kennel. All you have to do is relax and enjoy your holiday vacation.

Be Sure to Do Your Homework

Even when you're rushed for time, you don't want to place your pet in the first kennel available without touring it and asking several questions. The Humane Society of the United States recommends that you look for and ask about the following:

  • Clean appearance and fresh smell
  • Daily feeding schedule
  • Size of the kennel where your pet will stay
  • Whether dogs and cats are housed separately
  • Qualifications of the staff
  • If you're allowed to bring a special toy or treat from home
  • If any other services are included, such as bathing or grooming
  • Exercise schedule
  • Observe how the staff interacts with the animals

Also, don't be afraid to take notes or ask for clarification on anything you don't understand.

Preparing Your Pet for Holiday Boarding

Your pet should be current on all vaccinations and typically interact well with other animals. Dogs and cats who are unusually aggressive may do better with in a live-in sitter if possible. To prepare your pet for a longer stay, you may want to consider boarding him during shorter trips first. While you are busy packing, your pet can sense that something different is about to happen. As long as she isn't destructive, leave your luggage out for a few days and allow her to go near it. Cats like to sniff and mark things with their own scent while dogs may just like to climb on it.

If the kennel will allow it, bring a favorite toy or something your pet associates with you along for comfort. This can be something like a t-shirt you wear often or a throw pillow that you rest your head on while watching television. Your dog or cat will pick up your scent and know that you're not far away.
