Dear Dog Pet Parents,
You may have heard of Canine Influenza Virus, it is highly contagious virus like the human flu. There is a vaccine available for this virus! It is a vaccine recommended according to a pets lifestyle, so if your pet is a social butterfly; goes to dog parks, daycare, boarding, grooming, neighborhood walks, shared fences or shared water bowls– your pet should have this vaccine!

To keep our boarding pets safe, we are now requiring this vaccine to board at Minnesota Veterinary Hospital as of May 1, 2025. The vaccine should be given PRIOR to your pets boarding. We also highly recommend to vaccinate your pet if boarding elsewhere.

What vaccine does Minnesota Veterinary Hospital use and why?
We are using Merck Nobivac NXT Canine Flu H3N2 vaccine. Our veterinarians chose this vaccine because it offers protection for only the H3N2 virus, the other viruses are extinct. It is a powerful vaccine that targets both parts of a dog’s immune system and does not need to have an adjuvant or preservative. Each dose is only 0.5ml, or half the volume of other vaccines.
How safe is this vaccine?
A large field study involving over 650 dogs of various breeds, aged 8 weeks to 15 years, found lethargy to be the most common adverse side effect, observed in only 1.6% of dogs.
How is it given?
The first dose is given as an injection under the skin as early as 8 weeks of age with a booster shot in 3-4 weeks later. Revaccination is needed annually.
What is Canine Influenza again?
Canine Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the influenza virus, H3N2. It affects dogs of all ages, breeds, and health statues. The American Veterinary Medical Association lists the following symptoms:
- Persistent cough
- Thick nasal discharge
- Fever (104-105 degree F)
- Lethargy
- Reduced appetite
- Runny eyes

We know that it is important for your pet to receive social interaction, stimulation, and exercise in a supervised environment. We provide safe indoor and outdoor spaces where your animal is able to relax and stay active while boarding.
At Minnesota Veterinary Hospital’s boarding facility, we promote an environment that allows your pet to be happy, healthy, and receive plenty of personal attention. We strive to cater to your pet’s individual needs including extra outdoor time, well-balanced meals, administering medications, and providing both mental and physical stimulation.
While we understand that no daycare can replace the needed interaction a pet receives from its owner, we provide your pet with the best care possible while you are busy and away from home.
BOARDING:
Service to our clients, we offer quality boarding for cats, dogs, and other small pets. And for the well-being of all pets and our staff, we require that all vaccinations be current and that pets are parasites-free, prior to your scheduled boarding stay.
REQUIRED VACCINATIONS:
If we do not have a record of your pets’ vaccine history, please have your current veterinary clinic fax or email us a copy of the vaccinations with the date due. If your pet is not current on vaccines, please schedule an appointment at least a week prior to the requested boarding stay to have these updated.
